This time of year I slow down to get ready for a new beginning. Here’s a piece of mine that was published last year in the Winter Issue of Avocet, A Journal of Nature Poems. I hope you enjoy it.

Snowing on the Barn

Snowing on the Barn

Hibernation for Rejuvenation
The sky is pale blue,
almost white with the
slate-colored earth
beneath it. Like a bear
in a lair my body rests
in the warmth of the bed,
while outside the cold
drips to the ground
in a wet wildness.
Jerry’s got to get up from
our nap to feed the horses.
It begins to grow dark
and I retreat deeper
into the white blankets
as the rain turns to snow
outside the window and
I fall back to sleep knowing
that tomorrow the peak
will be covered with a shiny
bright surface. But within a
few days it will melt again.
By then I should be ready
to rise and face the future.
