Art For Sale (1996)

Fifteen years ago I started to run out of space in my house. Each mosaic I made got bigger and bigger. Also, I found I could only have so many mosaics near each other before they began to compete. It was time to get my work out there.  Here’s how I did it and luckily one opportunity led to another.

I thought a good place to start might be at a nearby designer boutique that sold art, used furniture and knickknacks. Due to my inhibitions I procrastinated for months. I wrote a script, practiced in the mirror and finally put a table I had mosaiced in the back of my car. I can still remember how fast my heart was beating when I entered the store and found the courage to approach the owner. He agreed to display the table on consignment.

The woman who bought that table happened to have art shows in her backyard and invited me to participate. I bought a cash box, set up an umbrella and displayed my work. It was empowering to have people admire and even pay for it. And it encouraged me to make more. (You’ll see how happy I am in the picture from that day.)

I discovered that I liked the idea of brightening other’s homes and making them smile when they see my work. Yes, the extra money was nice but I always seemed to use it to buy pieces from fellow artists or materials and found objects to fulfill my addiction of creating more mosaics.
