Surprise
At sunrise florescent
hummingbird pops up
from sweet-smelling sage,
zips to my windowpane.
She hovers on helicopter
wings, gazes inside
to mesmerize, makes
me glow with a smile.
I realize it’s been a while.

Spying avian friends make me happy. Are you a bird nerd too? What are your favorites?
Awesomeness, Jill!
Hi Linda, Thanks!
I love hummingbirds!
🙂
As you can see so do I!
I’m a total bird nerd!
Les, Aren’t your favorite ones owls & pelicans?
lovely poem, Jill. I love watching the hummers in the sage below my kitchen window. Then there are the crows…big bullies. But I like to watch them, too. Well, actually, pretty much any winged thing. And so happy we can have our windows open now that Spring has arrived and I can hear bird song in the morning. Thanks for this moment of joy.
Judy – Yes to open windows, fresh air and morning birdsong.
What a beautiful poem! We see hummingbirds – always perched in the same spot – on our morning walks. They always make us smile.
Emily, Have you given those hummingbirds names?
Beautiful Jill! My garden is filled with so many birds from hummers to Spotted Towhees. The crows spar with the hawks who make regular appearances; I’m sure it’s because of all the fluttering and dancing going on! It’s a different show everyday!
Wow! What are you feeding them?
I am also a bird nerd. I love the poem, so thanks for sharing so I could start my day today with it. I have a bird bath on my balcony. I tried a bird feeder for the hummingbirds but it was too messy for my neighbor below, so I switched to a bath. I absolutely love to hear the birds sing as they bathe, one looking out for predators and the other blissfully splashing away. Sometimes they come in family groups – also very fun. What isn’t fun though is when the crows come and get in the bath and splash all the water out, or they bring a big hunk of bread they found and put it in the water and then stay there eating it, but they invariably leave lots of little bits and the water is a mess. Or when I go out on the balcony and the crow doesn’t fly away but stares me down. Freaky! We also have an Osprey I watch that lives nearby and I’ve actually seen her catch a fish and fly to a boat mast nearby and devour it. Of course I’m looking through the binoculars at that. I love them all!
I have two hummingbird feeders on my patio. Sometimes, about sunset, it is hard for me to count how many hummingbirds are feeding, flying back and forth, or fighting with each other. They are so fun to watch.
