My desk is piled high with bills, unanswered email and an overflowing laundry basket. Everything is all jumbled in my mind and I can’t concentrate or be creative, so I block off a day to get my life back in order. I might throw on my sweats or maybe even just stay in my pajamas. I put on invigorating music such as Spanish guitar, 70’s disco or a favorite musical theatre album.
First, I focus on the nagging but easy things to do – sort dirty clothes, empty the dishwasher, organize my messy desk. Then I’ll plow through those piles one at a time. Last I’ll tackle my email inbox until it’s totally empty.
At the end of a day like this with a clean house, clean, desk and clean mind I’m rejuvenated and free to get creative again – write, draw, mosaic or whatever I wish. Or maybe I’ll just take the rest of the day off, watch a movie on TNT or catch up on my saved DVRed Dancing with the Stars shows. Either way I sure feel most excellent!
It is interesting that some “open and organized space” really helps get things moving. This is not to say that I haven’t created many things in the middle of a maelstrom, but energetically when things are clean, I think I am more creative.
Devora – I’ll admit there are times when I’m doing mosaics and just can’t stop to clean up!
